Winter’s Stream

The quiet stillness of winter is starting to come to an end with the longer warmer days. My mind is becoming more still and quiet with my new direction, spending more time in nature and doing a lot of hiking and exercise. I'm slowly finding my depression is starting to dissipate.

Winter's Stream was one of those warmer sunnier days of late winter when you start to feel the cold darkness of winter is to come to an end. This day I hiked out, about 3 km from the studio along the Bruce Trail and found this little stream, the subject for many sketches and this paint. While I was enjoying the stillness and the occasional disturbance of the quietness by birds playing in the nearby trees, I was thinking about where I was in life and were “I should be”. I realized how much I defined myself on the images marketing portrays and how unhappy this image has made me become. On the contrary, I'm most happy with the least amount of stuff, quality paint and brushes, some paper, and a second-hand pack to carry my gear.

Winter's Stream was painted on location during snowshoeing hiked trip inFebruary 2017 on 9 x 12 Carson sheet of 120lb (300g/m2) Watercolour Paper.
